Raiders notch first win of season

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Derek Carr threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to James Jones with 1:42 remaining and the Oakland Raiders snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 24-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Oakland's Latavius Murray ran for two touchdowns on four carries before leaving the game with a concussion.

The Raiders (1-10) built a 14-point lead, but needed a 17-play, 80-yard drive led by Carr to secure its first win since beating Houston on Nov. 17, 2013.

Alex Smith threw two TD passes for the Chiefs (7-4), who had won five in a row. They fell a half-game behind Denver in the AFC West.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Tony Sparano gathered the Oakland Raiders in a victorious locker room and praised them for sticking together through a 16-game losing streak.

Left tackle Donald Penn then presented Oakland's interim coach with a game ball that was well earned. Since taking over from the fired Dennis Allen after four games, Sparano has made the Raiders much more competitive despite their lack of success.

On Thursday night, he fulfilled a promise he made the day he took over to put smiles on his players' faces with a win as Oakland snapped its yearlong skid by beating the first-place Kansas City Chiefs 24-20.

Sparano said this game ball was the most meaningful he has ever gotten.

It took me a second to figure out what the numbers mean but I wonder if this can be done every season.

You figure teams rarely go 16-0 and 0-16 so wins can probably traced to every team. Take Denver who went 13-3. They lost to San Diego who lost to the 2-14 Texans.

We, at least, support all Bay Area teams. As opposed to the time I went to my local 7-Eleven in San Jose after the Niners' Super Bowl debacle and heard the employees gloating. Am I back in Baltimore (my original home town)?! Oh, right, they must be Raiders fans.
