Raiders, Jets likely to eye Harbaugh

No matter how tenuous the San Francisco 49ers' situation currently is, the fate of coach Jim Harbaugh won't be resolved until after this season, according to sources.

If the 49ers can pull off a 4-0 finish to the regular season and make a run in the postseason that some in the organization are still convinced is possible, Harbaugh could land a contract extension, sources said.

He will have one year remaining on his existing deal but has already rebuffed extension offers.

It is no secret that Harbaugh will be a commodity that interests other teams at season's end, like he did last season with the Cleveland Browns -- the 49ers even considered trading Harbaugh to Cleveland.

Despite what he is personality-wise, SF would be wise to keep him. They can't take this current success for granting knowing they had a long period of struggles 2003-2010.

The QB situation killed the Jets for Rex Ryan, not only that, they have had high turnover. The 2 AFC championship appearance teams look very different than the Jets today. Alex Smith has proved he can be consistent reliable player under 2 different head coaches (though both are in the top half of coaches in QB/offense coaching. Say what you will about Kaepernick - a lot of teams would replace their QB for him. It is interesting to note that he joins Tom Brady, Randall Cunningham, Matt Cassell, Daunte Culpepper, Jeff George, and maybe others in having their best season of their career with Moss on the field. Alex Smith had his highest seasonal YPA with Moss on the field as well.

2. As a Jets fan, I would be ....

happy with Harbaugh; there are aspects to Rex Ryan I do like and I'll miss him, but the page has to be turned. Rex was too loyal to the wrong guys for too long and he never developed an offensive and spent too much time with the defense.

Woody Johnson is a horrible owner on top of being an entitled GOP trust-baby worm. He's been rumored to be running for a Senate seat (because he can self-finance,) but his performance as owner has killed him as a candidate (that and having the brain of a can-opener.) The reason he got to own the team was that the other heirs to the Johnson & Johnson empire didn't want him having any operational input in the company so they made their billions available to Woody to buy the Jets to keep him busy there.

Good luck Harbaugh dealing with that shithead.

3. Jets are probably the team I study the most in the off-season aside from Arizona

One thing I did notice is Woody Johnson has a head coach and GM at odds with each other and when it comes to signing, trading, releasing, starting, who-to-draft and you have two different images it will effect roster development.

I can totally see the loyal part. I can't recall his name but one player who entered this preseason as a current player said that he always saw the Jets & Rex as a circus but when he gave him a shot after another team releasing him, he expressed nothing but love for him. The players threw a locker room celebration like they won a conference title because they saved a coaches job.

Marty Morinwheig(?) was supposed to be the coordinator to save the Jets offense. Tony Sparono was simply a bad hire because he was hired. I'm sure his wildcat vision is the reason why the Jets traded for Tim Tebow. Whoever pushed for these moves or agree to these trades were bad calls though outcome bias suggests the recent hire for coordinator was a bad call.

The Jets under Brian Schottenheimer had one of the best offenses in the league if you included their running game which was #1 and top-5 in back-to-back years. They need a find a way to get back to that as well as a QB can throw accurately. I think Vick would have been better as the guy taking first reps all season. The recent performance against Buffalo as well as Geno's miserable performance against the same team suggests that Buffalo is one of the best at game-planing against opposing QBs.

On edit - I forgot to include my point, it is never a good situation to have a GM & coach that aren't on the same page. It is a recipe for a failure which is the bad move on Woody's part. Fire one or the other but don't keep both.

On edit - If Rex Ryan was behind the draft picks for Dee Milliner, Sheldon Richardson, and Calvin Pryor -- they're good moves to set the Jets up for the future. Whoever ends up coaching the Jets will have young talent to build on rather than having to find young talent through trial & error. Still will need to find a QB though which is why I mention Harbaugh may not have similar success. Either that or Geno Smith plays better.

4. Someone needs to tell the Raiders they don't need to lose games

to get a better coach, that's just for getting better draft picks.

52 to fucking 0???? A complete embarrassment.

5. They don't even have a short week to blame it on

This makes that Thursday night game in St. Louis even scarier. Short week on the road who appears to have their early season woes behind them.

I knew back-to-back road games at Seattle & Atlanta were going to be tough in any scenario so I'm far from panic mode. Both feature some of the best home field advantages in the NFL and Atlanta is in the Eastern time zone where Arizona has about a .385 winning percentage contrasting to a near .700 at home since University of Phoenix Stadium opened.

They actually played well when it came to the passing game even with Larry Fitzgerald's absence. Even Ted Ginn Jr had a good game in the receiving department. They had problems stalling at midfield (I think they probably should have went for it on a 4th & 2 near the opponent's 40 with 9 minutes remaining), turnovers though the first interception didn't hurt but the Michael Floyd fumble after gaining a first down at Atlanta's 30 in the first half. Andre Ellington was also hurt in the first quarter which is someone I pay very close attention to--his rushing numbers may not jump out at you, especially after facing top 10 rushing defenses in 3 straight weeks (St. Louis, Detroit, Seattle) but his impact as a receiver cannot be overstated. You could also notice the difference in blocking from the RB position as well.

The inability to score touchdowns is starting to worry me, he missed John Brown on a TD pass in the 3rd quarter in a 17-10 game where the touchdown drought was ended by the defense on Rashad Johnson's 88-yard return.

Where they made some steps forward on offense as far as moving the ball thru the air is concerned. They took a major step back on defense. Tyrann Mathieu was also injured in the first quarter but Patrick Peterson was on Julio Jones the whole day who Peterson had an uncharacteristically bad game who made only one mistake against Calvin Johnson in two games which was a case of being beaten to the inside badly which is interesting for a guy who was a famous reputation for getting burnt but still made the deflection due to his speed -- http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000244679/Johnson-72-yard-TD-reception.

Though they could have reversed a 41-yard gain by Julio Jones if Arians challenged but it is one of those kind of days.

Stephen Jackson also broke the 100-yard mark, first player since Frank Gore week 6 2013. The bulk of which was a 55 yarder on the first drive which led to a TD after the announcers were praising the defense's excellence in that department.

It could have got ugly if a Hester punt return TD wasn't called back the drive after due to an offensive face mask on the punter which the punter actually had a better hold on Hester's mask.

Like I said, I never had high hopes for this game. Even under the best case scenario it would still be the perfect setup for a trap. What I'm worried about is Kansas City followed by a short week in St. Louis followed by back-to-back closing matchups against recent conference heavyweights San Francisco & Seattle. That 1 seed is very crucial considering the major losses and Ellington fighting through the season with injuries (he is on the injury report every week though usually on the probable designation). The starters that were injured should be ready for next week though Mathieu will have to play with a cast. Larry Fitzgerald probably should be ready considering he was a game-time decison the last 2 weeks.

I'm sorry to go off on a sidetrack like this, that St. Louis score highlights my worry. I'm not in a panic over the road losses at Seattle & Atlanta but Kansas City at home is the closest to a "winnable" game they have. Seattle they also have at home but Seattle is still Seattle and that #1 seed is very important. That Green Bay win over New England is killer since they don't have the head-to-head tie-breaker like they do with the other 9-3 & 8-4 teams--just a 1 game edge in record vs conference. Also Seattle controls its destiny for the division title thanks to their win over San Franc. A sweep which would include a win at Arizona gives them the title even if Arizona goes 3-0 which would likely mean a road game in the Georgia or Superdome which would scare the shit out of me regardless of the difference in records. The NFC South situation is simply a case of getting beat up by the AFC North as well as Green Bay & Detroit.

On edit - the Seattle-Philadelphia is a lose-lose situation but if it ends up coming down to the divisional title & a home game, I hope Philadelphia wins. If it is the 1 seed then I hope Seattle wins but either way the outlook isn't pretty.

6. Harbaugh could also wait a wait a year or two for a better team. I can't see the Raiders ...

Mark Davis and Jim Harbaugh? Nope. Plus, a QB he had no hand in selecting, a weak roster, a new GM (prediction), a small market and a bad stadium. Hope, nope, nope.

Why about the N.Y. Giants? Coughlin is probably gone too.

It's a foregone conclusion Harbaugh and Greg Roman are history. I predict Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator, will be his replacement.
