(78,249 posts)Too bad they never played against each other in an SB.
I think Aikmans Boys would beat Brady's Pats.

(16,113 posts)Players tend to be bigger and faster now than they were 20 years ago. The cowboys line was huge for 1995, they'd be the same size as New England's OL this year, which is about middle of the pack for today's NFL. The Defensive linemen have gotten bigger and faster over the last two decades as well, which would probably cause some issues for the Cowboys running game. Conversely, the Cowboys DL would be considered smaller by today's standards, which could create problems for them stopping the run.
Do you play by the rules of 1995 where cornerbacks can mug the receivers on the line, or the current ones? The patriots won a couple of SB's playing that style, but that was a decade ago, and other than Browner, I'm not sure their current personnel could do it. I'm also skeptical that some of the Pats receivers would be able to run their routes against that style of Cowboys defense.
With the constant increase of size and speed that has been going on in the NFL since the beginning, as well as rule changes that affect the way the game is played, it's tough to really have an honest comparison of teams from different eras.
Compare either team to the 72 dolphins, and it wouldn't even be close.

(29,322 posts)The most sweeping passing game rule changes was the 5 yard cap in 1978 on allowing contact with a change of emphasis a long the way with 2014 one of them but the rule still exists. 94 was another year where they placed on emphasis on prohibiting contact after 5 years though this was to discourage "down-field chucking" because QBs would take advantage of the contact still taking place and get an easy pass interference flag.
Denver was notable for using an undersized offensive line at-the-time which was helpful for their zone block schemes.
Personally, I feel the early 2000s Patriots would be a better team with their terrific pass defense and a shut down corner of their own Ty Law. They also roughed up Indy receivers in 2003.
72 Dolphins was interesting before the most sweeping changes. They could mug receivers all-the-way down field but this was after the "run friendly" blocking change rules, 72 was one of those teams that had 1,000 rushers or two 900+ rushers to include the 2005 Denver Broncos. They didn't throw often but Paul Warfield was a terrific receiver with a high YPC (implying speed). Not to mention a terrific defense of their own & collectively as a unit went to 3 straight Super Bowls.

(16,113 posts)I guess it's not a rule change as such, but the receivers could get away with a level of "incidental contact" that would be flagged every time now.
As for the 72 dolphins, their offensive line averaged about 250 lbs. They wouldn't have been able to run or protect the QB against either the 95 Cowboys or today's Patriots... Hell, they wouldn't be able to protect the quarterback against today's Raiders, Jaguars or Ohio State.

(29,322 posts)I'll never forget when Jacksonville crushed Denver at home when the Broncos looked like a Super Bowl team, they ended up winning the next two seasons and that 14-2 Jacksonville team was really great. Gave Dan Marino a crushing defeat in his last game--only problem was they couldn't beat the Titans. He eventually became a journeyman but he was a big reason why Jacksonville quickly became a contending team after expansion.
I can't think of a QB that talks more shit Terry Bradshaw, he was very hard on Elway in his early years. I've also noted he tends to dislike rookie QBs who tend to lead to a mention of Terry Bradshaw's rookie year stats for comparison.
Here is the thing about rings, I think Tom Brady is a much better QB after he won Super Bowls, the 3rd is that cusp. It was when he started performing at an above-average to elite level. Also compare any QB who you think is merely good to Terry Bradshaw and that QB likely has better numbers. The 70s QB was a pretty solid group but is probably the weakest decade for top QBs.

(35,441 posts)Because we have to take that into account when we do an evaluation.

(65,076 posts)I don't take that into account. I think it quite naive to believe that every time is skirting or breaking some rule on a routine basis.
