The Braves implosion continues: Kimbrel and Melvin Upton traded
The Atlanta Braves have traded closer Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. to the San Diego Padres.
San Diego will send oft-injured outfielders Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin to Atlanta along with prospects Matt Wisler and Jordan Paroubeck, and the 41st pick overall in the upcoming draft.
Kimbrel led the National League in saves last year with 47 and has saved no fewer than 42 games over the past four seasons with the Braves, and was named an All-Star every year during that stretch. Kimbrel has amassed a major league-leading 185 saves since his first full season in 2011 and is one of just three pitchers in MLB history to have four consecutive seasons of at least 40 saves.
The move will reunite Upton with his brother Justin, whom the Padres also acquired from the Braves in a trade this offseason.
