Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh might want to avoid talk of this on the recruiting trail.
Alex Boone, an offensive lineman who played under Harbaugh when he coached the San Francisco 49ers, said the hard-driving coach may be certifiably "crazy," NBC Sports' ProFootballTalk reported Sunday.
"I think he just pushed guys too far," he told HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" in a segment to air Tuesday, as quoted by NBC's ProFootballTalk.
"He wanted too much, demanded too much, expected too much. You know, 'We gotta go out and do this. We gotta go out and do this. We gotta go out and do this.' And you'd be like, 'This guy might be clinically insane. He's crazy,'" said Boone, who does not hold a degree in psychology.

Clinically insane? I'll let the doctors diagnose that one. But it's easier to understand how Harbaugh's relationships with the team and front office disintegrated over time. Even Harbaugh admits as much: "it must be true, yeah, sometimes I wear out my welcome," he told ProFootballTalk.
Too bad. The guy is a great coach.
Good luck, Michigan.

(38,687 posts)I had a boss like that once. The 'Demand the Impossible' type. I think there's some kind of upper management motivational course out there these people take that causes them to act like that. They can be a real pain in the @#$.

(16,113 posts)it's tough to say this is the case. It certainly could be true, but I'd like to hear some examples first. As far as Boone goes, I'll bet a number of coaches read his comments and crossed him off their list of free agents they might be interested in.
Boone also said something that sheds light on the perspective of the locker room. The players had nothing to do with him getting fired, Boone says, which suggests that the players arent buying the whole mutual parting thing.
If the coach were really making truly ridiculous demands, I'd think this other part might not be true.
