When Afleet Alex was born his dam couldn't produce milk and rejected him. He was hand fed by his terminally ill breeder's 9yo daughter from a sterilized Bud Light bottle until a nurse mare could be found. His owners donated a large part of his racetrack winnings to Alex's Lemonade Stand. A rough trip cost him the Derby and his chance at the Triple Crown. He came back from defeat in Louisville to deliver what I feel was the greatest display of athletic ability I ever saw in the Preakness. What a great story and what a great horse. I hope he produces a Derby winner at stud. He deserves it.

(15,223 posts)I'm excited for Saturday's race. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be anywhere to be able to see it live.

(1,609 posts)I heard rumors D. Wayne Lukas shipped Zayat Stables Derby runner, Mr. Z, to Pimlico and said,"he runs in the Preakness or he doesn't run at all". If it's true there could be some fireworks at Old Hilltop since Zayat also owns Derby winner American Pharoah.

(41,692 posts)I know you said AP looked tired.... I didn't get that. I thought he looked gritty.
You may be right though. Hence the power of handicapping and putting real money in the game.
