ACC suspends officials from Miami-Duke game; TD should not have counted

Dan Wolken, USA TODAY Sports 1:31 p.m. EST November 1, 2015

The Atlantic Coast Conference acknowledged Sunday that Miami’s kickoff return touchdown to beat Duke 30-27 should not have counted and that officials made four major errors during the last play.

Though the ACC is not overturning the result of the game, the league has suspended both the on-field officiating crew and the two replay booth officials for two games.

“The quality of our officiating program is of the highest importance to the league and its schools, and the last play of the game was not handled appropriately,” Commissioner John Swofford said in a release. “Officiating is an extraordinarily difficult job but our players, coaches, programs and fans deserve the best that can be offered. We will continue to strive to meet that standard."

The ACC determined that a Miami player’s knee was down before releasing one of the eight laterals that allowed the play to happen, which was apparent both on video and in still pictures that were being circulated on social media late Saturday night. The ACC acknowledged that this call should have been overturned.

“If called, this would have ended the game,” the ACC said.

I watched the knee thing 20 times and there is no certain evidence that the knee was down---in other words---they couldn't overturn it because it wasn't conclusive.

You can see the ball out of the players hand as the knee was touching the ground.

Now I will say that at the beginning a Miami player hit a Duke player in the back---that was obvious as shit---but the refs didn't see it....they did throw a flag at the end saying there was a block in the back---but replays show that wasn't the case.

. . .the one downfield, the blocker did get his head in front of the guy's chest, even though the angle was from behind. And, there was another Miami guy right there, so that guy wasn't getting to the ball carrier.

Didn't see the block in the back you were talking about. Missed that one.

And, i don't think i could have overturned the call based upon the video either. And, i don't even care who wins or loses any of these games. No skin in the game.

"The ACC announced Sunday it has suspended the on-field officiating crew as well as the replay official and communicator for two games following errors on the final wild play that gave Miami a 30-27 win over Duke on Saturday. This is how Miami responded on Twitter."

"It is unbelievable how effective Duke is at working over the media. There is no conversation at all about the record setting 23 penalties called on Miami, or the 3 bogus pass interference calls on Duke's last drive, or the officials giving Duke a timeout back without any justification whatsoever, or the officials twice stopping the clock to allow Duke to set up their offense after all their timeouts were burned, or granting Duke a TD on a pay where their quarterback clearly did not get into the end zone.

Those officials SHOULD be suspended, but the last play of the game has absolutely zilch to do with it."

They just reshaped it on ESPN 2...pretty obvious Miami got several breaks...oh well it will soften the blow when one team goes 19-0...and the whole city has nothing more to brag about.
