First Nations chief supports Blackhawks logo redesign with black hawk

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/first-nations-chief-supports-blackhawks-logo-redesign-of-black-hawk-210325573.html

A rendering of a new Chicago Blackhawks logo has the support of Quebec’s top First Nations chief according to a story by CBC....

The above logo was created by Mike Ivall, a Toronto-based Ojibwa artist. It features an actual black hawk with the team’s similar color scheme. Interestingly Ivall says he no longer owns the rights to the design....

According to the piece Picard believes the team’s logo is just as offensive as that of the Washington Redskins. The Blackhawks name has not received the same level of scrutiny as the Redskins. For Washington, there have been multiple calls to change its name along with its logo.

The Winnipeg Jets banned headdresses at their games when the Blackhawks visit in part because of a complaint by longtime Jets fan Jordan Wheeler.

1. Change It Or Not

The Blackhawks don't have some yahoo with warpaint skating around the ice. The jersey is just a profile of a tribal chief. The fans don't do a tomahawk chop or a war chant.

Picard is entitled to his opinion, of course, but the name is not inherently a racial slur. We have teams called the Celtics, the Canucks, the Fighting Irish, etc. A tribal name is not inherently a slur. So, i don't know how this can be a disparaging as "Redskins". That name is meant to demean and disparage. There is no good use of the word.

But, if they change the logo, that is ok by me. The new one is pretty cool!

especially since the name "Blackhawks" only references the tribe indirectly. The team was named for a military unit in which its owner had served, which in turn was named for the tribe.

He was from the Sauk tribe. (I grew up across the street from Blackhawk State Park which includes to area where the Sauk village was located.)

But, although a Hawks fan, the current logo as a sterotyped image has bothered me visually, even if the name doesn't. I like the new logo, too.

. . .i don't share the stereotype view of that image. It seems pretty respectful to me. Nothing like Chief Yahoo, or Chief Illinewek, or the smiling brave. And it's nothing compared to "redskins".
