Posted by Rocktivity (9/11/2014):...(Ray) Rice accepted the plea deal on May 21 according to this timeline, and the NFL had the second video as of April 9. Well, if that's the case, Rice should have been suspended for a full year on May 22 (and he should have told Goodell he hit her as soon as they were released from custody in February). Then when the second video got leaked, all Goodell would have had to say was, "It's regrettable that the video was leaked, but I guess you can see why we came down on him as hard as the pot smoker."
19-year-old Okafor was screaming at the other man, "We got money you broke ass n**ga."...A scuffle ensues -- people tried to hold Okafor back -- but he escapes and swings wildly at another man...sending him flying to the ground...
(According to) a rep for...Okafor...(he) says he was being heckled from the moment he left the club and felt threatened...(H)e was with a teammate -- who he wouldn't name -- and says someone got physical with the teammate, so Jahlil did what he felt he needed to do to protect himself and his friend.
(A)ccording to the victim...Okafor approached two girls that were hanging with the victim and tried to get their numbers. The girls weren't interested, and shot Okafor down...(A) verbal altercation ensued, and Okafor became unhinged...punching him in the face, as you can see in the video first posted by TMZ Sports.
Okafor...says he's embarrassed by the incident, but stands by his story that he reacted because he felt threatened by hecklers.
There's more: Okafor was also pulled over...3 weeks ago for going 108 mph over (a) bridge.
"I own my choices both personally and now publicly. At this point I am cooperating and respecting the process I have to go through," Okafor said. "Going forward I don't want to be a distraction for my team and am grateful for the support and guidance those close to me are giving. I am 100% focused on my responsibility to the League, my teammates and fans."
We also asked if Okafor would be seeking anger management or any other kind of treatment in the wake of the street fight in Boston, and we were told there are no immediate plans for that...
...(T)he 6'11" rookie trad(es) insults with a heckler while people in Okafor's crew tried desperately to hold him back and walk him away from the situation...(H)e breaks away and throws punches at the heckler ... and a melee ensues. You can see a man gets knocked out cold in the street -- suffering gashes on his face -- but it's hard to tell who threw the punch.
Boston PD is investigating the incident with officials telling us charges are likely to be filed.
TMZ Sports first posted footage of Okafor fighting on Thanksgiving Eve...but the team allowed him to play the following game. Now -- after...a second video showing Okafor attacking another man -- the team has decided to take action.
The team issued a statement saying "While we are disappointed with his recent actions, we have faith in him as a valued member of the Sixers. We will provide the necessary resources to support him on his journey and will do our part to help him succeed both on and off the court."
While there's certainly enough blame to go around, I think this is even worse than the NFL's initial reaction to Ray Rice because the 76ers had ample evidence of Okafor's shortcomings even before the first video came to light. And once again, if they'd done the right thing immediately, they would have been in the perfect position to say, "It's regrettable that the videos were leaked, but I guess you can see why we decided to come down on him so hard!" And how much longer before Oakfor decides he's tired of being threatened by hecklers and starts carrying a gun himself? Another "Next Aaron Hernandez Award" candidate!

(9,350 posts)Jahlil okafor is a lucky guy. One of those guys could have pulled out a gun and killed him, or ended his basketball career. Aside from that, one kick to the knee could have either ended Okafor's career, or seriously damaged his career. If you are making millions of dollars a year and some guy who likely has a regular job that pays him far less than your job, just walk away from the guy heckling you. The guy with the regular job has far less to lose. Yes, if he pulls out a gun and kills you he will go to jail. Even in that case, he still wins because you are still dead and have lost out on a multi-million dollar career. Yes, he will go to jail for the rest of his life, or he will get a needle in the arm, but still he did not have to give up a multi-million dollar career.
