49ers dismiss Jim Tomsula after 5-11 season

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- After one strange season, the San Francisco 49ers fired rookie coach Jim Tomsula.

"Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years," CEO Jed York said in a statement. "We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated. This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future."

The Niners went 5-11 in Tomsula's lone season as head coach and ended the year with a 19-16 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday in front of a sparse crowd at Levi's Stadium.

He should have never been given the job to begin with -- epic fail by management.

But here's the kicker, according to the San Jose Mercury News:

Jed York and Trent Baalke were conspicuously absent after Sunday's game, so they had their people send word.

They were noticeable no-shows, so they washed their hands of this mess and ended Jim Tomsula's 49ers coaching career via press release.

York and Baalke exited the scene. Fled. Ran away. Then via proxy they fired Tomsula -- the man they hand-picked to replace Jim Harbaugh only a year ago.

How brave of York and Baalke to end the absurd experiment this way. How typically callow and how symbolic of the leadership vacuum in this franchise.

"How typically callow and how symbolic of the leadership vacuum in this franchise."

Doesn't get any worse than that.

He's having to much fun right where he is.

Tomsula's singular mistake was hitching his wagon to Kaepernick. Any smart coach would have benched the brain dead Kaepernick after two or three weeks, not eight.

You had two coaches (Tomsula and OC Geep Chryst) who were in over-their-heads. My guess is that GM Trent Baalke made the call on Kaepernick until the injury.

Kapernick refused to improve his footwork despite strong suggestion by Kurt Warner in the offseason. It showed in his throws IMO.

Early in the year opponents said they knew what plays the 49ers were going to run before they ran them.

The offensive line was a disaster, especially the right guard and tackle positions. Couldn't pass protect.

The defense was slow to learn new schemes by new coordinator Eric Mangini which led to early blow-out losses.

Questionable draft choices in years prior left the team too shallow to contend with roster losses from free agency, retirement and injury.

Kaepernick injured his shoulder in a Week 4 loss to the Green Bay Packers, or so they say. The public and Las Vegas knew nothing of the injury until he was benched, and the cynics suggest the surgery, that could have have been scheduled at the end of the season, was just a ploy to invoke the injury clause in his crappy owner-friendly contract to assure his income next year.

for undermining Harbaugh last year. Others believe it is directed at franchise president York.

Someday the details of the 2014 season and Harbuagh's firing will emerge. I'd love to know what happened.
