LET’S DANCE! Yale Bulldogs Clinch NCAA Tournament Berth With Win At Columbia

http://www.yalebulldogs.com/sports/m-baskbl/2015-16/releases/20160305xjl3su

Yale is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 54 years. Makai Mason scored 22 points to lead four players in double figures as the Bulldogs cruised to a 71-55 victory over Columbia before a sellout crowd of 2,720, many of them Yale fans, at Levien Gym.

Yale used the same formula it has all season, winning the battle of the boards 39-24, limiting Columbia to 40.4 percent from the field and assisting on 16 of its 27 field goals. Rebounding, defense and sharing the ball has led the Bulldogs to 22 wins and a 13-1 Ivy League mark, which matches the best in school history.

The 1961-62 team, the last to reach the NCAA Tournament, also won 13 Ivy games.

The Bulldogs will learn their NCAA Tournament destination on Selection Sunday, Mar. 13.

UPSETS?

No. 12 Yale over No. 5 Baylor, West Region. The Bulldogs are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1962 despite their captain being dismissed from the team and the Bears are from the big, bad Big 12. Still, Yale is a tough team to face and Baylor struggled down the stretch. The Bears also lost to Georgia State as a No. 3 seed last season.

Yale 79, Baylor 75!

When was the last time the Ivy champ won its first-round game? Usually we give the power-conference team a fight but fall short.

Turns out archrival Hahvahd beat Cincinnati a mere two years ago before falling to Michigan State. I must have blocked that one out.

They almost ate it today. We came within a hair's breadth of being the higher seed!

I normally wouldn't be able to watch it either, but my hairdresser had the game on so I made her spin the chair around so that I could catch the end of the game while she applied all the goop to my head.

And yes, we did discuss the men's haircut known as 'The Princeton".

As In Makai Mason?

BTW, Yale had NEVER won an NCAA Tournament game. And they hadn't beaten a top 25 team in a Boola Boolian years.

A Makai Mason would be a member of a secret society who lived towards the ocean.

What I want to know is, how did a haole kid from western Mass. end up being named Makai? And does he have a brother named Mauka? :shurg:
