With one game to go, the Golden State Warriors are 72-9, and having given San Antonio its first home loss of the season on Sunday night, they now have a 93 percent chance to overtake Michael Jordans 1995-96 Bulls for the best regular-season record in NBA history.
Ahead of Sundays game, our CARM-Elo ratings gave Golden State a 31 percent chance to beat San Antonio. And through one quarter, the Warriors had just 14 points. But Stephen Curry, instead of his usual barrage from deep, took the ball inside and scored 37 points on 22 shots, including a number of ridiculous floaters, pull-ups and finger-rolls. (Curry also hit a 60-odd-footer at the end of the third quarter that was waved off.) The game remained close for most of the night, but Golden State pulled away about midway through the fourth quarter, when the Spurs scored just 4 points in a crucial three-and-a-half-minute run.
The Warriors Saturday game against the Memphis Grizzlies was a little more dramatic, requiring a late tip-in from Draymond Green and two even later misses from Lance Stephenson, one of which was close enough to a foul that the league office was compelled to adjudicate the decision the following day. (The call was good.)
As for the matchup between San Antonio and Golden State, its hard to say exactly what was going on. In four games against the Warriors this season, the Spurs have been awful around the rim (50.0 percent within 10 feet; 58.7 percent for the season) and forced deep into the shot clock far more often than usual (10.5 shots per game with four seconds or less on the shot clock; 6.8 regularly), which is always a bad sign. Worse yet, the number of wide-open looks from three with the nearest defender six or more feet away dropped from 8.3 shots per game to 5.5.

(78,249 posts)Not really my favorite part of a Hawaiian plate, which many places in the islands serve on Fridays. It consists of kalua (pulled) pork, rice, lomilomi (raw, diced, with tomatoes) salmon, and of course, poi.

(65,076 posts)I don't see any way they lose a home game to Memphis.

(10,893 posts)especially considering those games against Boston and Minnesota earlier. Memphis is probably going to be hungry and some of their players will be fighting for their jobs.

(65,076 posts). . .i didn't say 100%. 93% just seems too low given the stakes.

(7,429 posts)I think they can get to at least the 5th seed with a win!

(17,086 posts)I won't mind seeing a Bulls' record fall, either. Jordan was the GOAT, but he ruined the NBA for me.

(65,076 posts)Don't get that Digger.
How can the GOAT ruin the NBA for someone? I'm not seeing how that could be.

(17,086 posts)Who watched the NBA besides Chicago fans in the Jordan era? I don't blame Jordan for it, or the league, as I'm not sure what they could have done about it, but there wasn't much for the rest of the country to cheer for.

(65,076 posts)Phoenix with Barkley, the Rockets with Hakeem, the Blazers and Sonics with Clyde and Kemp, the Knicks, the Magic with Shaq and Penny, were all VERY good teams.
Then teams like Milwaukee and San Antonio and Sacramento and Denver and Washington and Atlanta were all pretty good.
OK, two teams won all the titles in 8 years, but there was a ton of good basketball in the late 80's to the late 90's.

Well, if it's any consolation, your guys are better than my Bulls now! Better team play, and my team can't, or won't, play defense.

(17,086 posts)And I see you have a little self-interest yourself in the topic.
Rose is kind of becoming the Bulls' Reggie Lewis. If not for injuries, what might have been?

(65,076 posts)Came from WAY(!) back against a pretty good Heat team and won the game.
Good way to jump head first into the playoffs!

(17,086 posts)But this year is just a place holder, anyways. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Ainge does with all those draft picks, and then criticizing him relentlessly if it doesn't pan out.

(56,177 posts)Jordan is unquestionably the GOAT, but I never cared for him at all. I cheered for every team that played them.

(9,527 posts)Wilt was far and away a better overall player than Jordan ever was. The NBA made it easier for Jordan to score and made it harder for Chamberlain. And that's before taking into account Chamberlain's impact with rebounds, blocked shots and managing to lead the league in assists.
Jordan was a great scorer, but the league made rule changes deliberately to make it easier for him to score by hamstringing defenses and effectively refusing to call either traveling or palming the ball while dribbling.

(17,086 posts)One talent Jordan and Russell shared that Chamberlain lacked is the ability to make those around them better as well. Team attributes count in a team sport.
