Through the magic of radio, 'The Life of Riley' introduced the nation to the line, and it became an instant meme; everyone was saying it. Durante certainly could say it funnier, but I loved Bendix's defeated deadpan delivery.

I would love to see footage of the first TV season with Jackie Gleason delivering the line, if only to steal a glance of my childhood crush, Gloria Winters (Penny King).

As was the whole movie. It took advantage of the the attention gained by the real Babe's declining health.

really, really learned more baseball than Bendix could ever absorb. But then again, Bing actually listened to his mentors: Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, and Lefty Gomez

If you haven't seen The Battered Bastards of Baseball, you can catch it on Netflix. The film is definitely worth a look-see.
