First was his idea to limit defensive shifts in the field. Now he wants to restrict the use of relief pitchers.
Presented with a scenario in which restrictions are placed on the number of pitching changes allowed per inning or per game, Manfred said, I am actually in favor of something like that. We spent a ton of time on this issue in the last few months.

"I've got nothing against relief pitchers, but they do two things to the game, Manfred said. The pitching changes themselves slow the game down and our relief pitchers have become so dominant at the back end that they actually rob action out of the end of the game, the last few innings of the game.
So relief pitchers is a topic that is under active consideration. We're talking about that a lot internally."

"Rob action out of the end of a game ..." That's as stupid as it gets.

Really bad idea.

(4,357 posts)Not being allowed to replace a guy who can't get anybody out - THAT will shorten the game for sure. Those ten-run innings don't take any time at all.

(31,173 posts)righty/lefty confrontations, for example (much like the DH destroyed hitting strategy in the American League). Those final innings are the most exciting part of the game.

(10,893 posts)commissioners always trying to fix things that aren't broken? The pace of the game doesn't need any more dumb changes. If people still think baseball is boring and don't appreciate the sport, that's their problem. There's no need for pitching clocks or relief pitcher limits. Just quit it, already.

(65,076 posts)I think pace of play is broken. I remember hearing Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau at the end of Cubs games (WGN radio) regularly referring to the time of game and it was always 2 hours 30 minutes of less.
That's the 7th inning now.
I can buy in with folks here that relief pitchers may not be the problem, and that tactical moves have been made for the righty/righty or lefty/lefty match up for decades, or more. But, the two visits to the mound rule which could then apply three times in one inning, could be reconsidered. For instance, one visit and then any other visit means you have to change pitchers. Doesn't matter if this is the second pitcher. If it's the second or third time out, going out there means you have to change the pitchers.
If a manager is really strategizing like that, he shouldn't need more time for his relievers to warm up in the pen. He should have them up and getting loose so the moment he needed them, they were ready.
I'd limit the pitches for warm up after they're out there too. A few pitches to get the feel of the dirt and groove at the pitchers rubber, and that's it. Batter, get in the box!
And, especially in the big field stadia, use a golf cart to the guy from the outfield bullpen to the mound. The slow, languid walk to come in for one hitter is just wasting time.
Some here say "if it ain't broke..." but where we disagree, is that i do think there is a problem.
Now, if you want to tell me, no more stepping out of the box to adjust batting gloves when you haven't even swung the bat would speed up the game even more, then we agree on that totally

saw that last night in S.F with Sergio Romo. He gave up two homers a hit before a visit from Dave Righetti straightened him out. You can't lose the option of that visit.
I think this is really coming from television. But they're wrong in thinking "more action" would speed up the game (in the literal sense). It's an idea for morons, just like the DH. I think the game has become more strategic and I like that.
MLB should add an on-site replay ump to all squads in order to speed up reviews.

(65,076 posts)Still, i'm having some trouble with your "tweaking" comment. The guy needed tweaking to pitch one inning. Then he gets one guy out, and that is attributed to the "tweak". 3 in 4 guys make outs every game anyway.
That seems more regression to the mean than coaching.
