Las Vegas stadium backers down to two top sites to attract Raiders

Associated Press
LAS VEGAS -- Backers of a proposed NFL stadium said they've whittled their list to two sites just west of the Las Vegas Strip and will refuse to accept any less than $750 million in public funding toward the project, which they hope will soon be home to the Oakland Raiders.

Representatives from Majestic Realty and the Las Vegas Sands casino company updated an oversight committee Thursday on their quest to build a 65,000-seat domed stadium, showing off their slick renderings of the proposed venue in a video with an edgy soundtrack. They said the price tag continues to rise and is now $1.9 billion, saying they'd walk away from the project if state lawmakers don't meet their minimum financial demand.

"Not to be difficult, but we're not negotiable," said Sands president Rob Goldstein, who spoke on behalf of billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and his family. "If we can't get 750, we respectfully thank you but we're going to move on."

The Raiders have made little progress securing a new stadium in the Oakland area and have committed to lining up $500 million toward building a new one in Las Vegas. Any team relocation needs the blessing of three-quarters of NFL owners, so developers are rushing to prepare their pitch by January, when the owners next meet.

Oakland Raiders file to trademark 'Las Vegas Raiders'

The Oakland Raiders filed for three trademarks to the phrase "Las Vegas Raiders" this week, perhaps the next step in a move from Oakland to Sin City. The trademarks seek to give the team the exclusive right to use the name for sporting events and to sell the phrase on everything from helmets to swimsuits to earmuffs.

The team did not seek to trademark a logo related to the prospective move.

While the team will likely wind up with the rights to the trademarks, it will take some time. Six filings have sought to trademark the phrase before the Raiders did, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office reviews filings in the order in which they were received.

Those who filed -- all six on Jan. 29 and Jan. 30 when owner Mark Davis began his flirtation with moving to the city -- will likely then have to make the case that their filing is unrelated to the team.

And I don't want any public funds going towards that filth Adelson's vanity project.

they get enough owners to approve the move and until the dummies in Nevada find a way to give him his handout, this trademarking means very little except further dividing the Raiders fan base and alienating local fans. I don't see them being able to move, at least not anytime soon.

My understanding was there would be two teams moving to L.A., the Rams and either the Chargers or the Raiders, with the Chargers getting right of first refusal on being the second team.

I could be wrong, but I think that was the deal.

They even recently released renderings that are very similar to the renderings he had for LA.

[Raiders owner Mark] Davis told an influential tourism committee gathered at UNLV that the Raiders would put up $500 million toward the stadium if Nevada legislators approve public funding for the project and other NFL owners allow the team to relocate…

“We do want to be your partners. We’re not coming in looking for a free handout,” Davis said. “I want to tell you what I told Gov. Sandoval a few weeks ago: Together, we can turn the Silver State into the Silver and Black State.”

That’s not exactly the catchiest slogan, but never you mind about that. Let’s take a closer look at exactly what Davis (and billionaire would-be Vegas stadium builder) Sheldon Adelson) are offering, and what they’re asking for:

The stadium would now cost $1.4 billion, up from $1.2 billion just a couple of months ago, presumably because if it’s hosting an NFL team it’s going to need a snazzier eternal flame.
Davis’s $500 million pledge would include $200 million in NFL G-4 money, plus $300 million out of his own pocket.
As for the other $900 million, $750 million of it would be from hotel and rental-car taxes (down slightly from $780 million in the last proposal), and the other $150 million would be in mystery “private funds.” Since we haven’t mentioned Adelson yet, and he has $150 million in loose change in a jar in his kitchen, maybe he could bring that.

I think the Rams heading there first made it less likely those other teams want to, particularly with the fan base they have. If the Chargers do too then I think they will go where the new stadium whether it is Oakland, LA, or Las Vegas.

5. The Chargers future in San Diego is far from decided

San Diego will have two initiatives on the November the ballot to determine the Chargers future in the city: The Chargers plan, and The Citizens Plan. Recent polls indicate both initiatives will fall short of the required two-thirds vote. But, and it's a big but, the Citizens Plan bigwigs plan to appeal to the courts if their plan is defeated, claiming they only needed a simple majority.

The NFL is willing to wait it out (establishing a precedent for future football stadiums deals?), the Raiders aren't.
