U.S. figure skater Ashley Wagner: Donald Trump is 'absolutely disgusting'

U.S. figure skater Ashley Wagner, a three-time national champion and the reigning world silver medalist, has never been one to shy away from an issue.

She is perhaps best known for her outspoken criticism of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s anti-gay propaganda law before and during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games, where she was a member of the bronze-medal-winning U.S. team.

During a conference call with reporters Thursday evening in advance of Skate America, the season-opening Grand Prix event, I asked Wagner if she had any thoughts about the comments Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump has made about women.

Not surprisingly, she did.

“I believe through and through that any man who speaks in such a degrading way towards women is absolutely vile and disgusting," Wagner said. "I totally understand the concept of locker room talk and yes, I’m sure that exists, but at the same time, if you’re saying it, that still says something about you as a person.

"As a woman in this world, I truly cannot support anyone who does not treat women as equals or with any amount of respect. So I think that’s kind of all I have to say to that. I think he’s absolutely disgusting.”
