Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden had a Donovan McNabb moment Sunday afternoon, admitting, albeit somewhat sarcastically, that he didn’t know NFL games could result in a tie.

“I don’t know how to react,” Gruden said following a 27-27 tie with the Cincinnati Bengals. “I didn’t think it was possible to tie. I know there was a tie last week in Arizona, but I was like, ‘How the heck did they tie?’ Now, we know.”

On paper, Gruden’s statement reads as if he, like McNabb in 2008, did not realize the rules of the game. In his actual news conference though, Gruden’s tone was more of exasperation with his team’s inability to put the game away.

It’s a sobering reminder that, if there’s anyone, say an NFL coach, out there who still doesn’t know that there can, in fact, be ties in the NFL, they’re real and they can happen to you too (if you miss two field goals, come up short on fourth-and-1 and commit 15 penalties for 106 yards).
