The Arizona Cardinals are backing off their plan to select Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft this Thursday, according to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports.
That could mean the Cards are sticking with Josh Rosen as their QB. The Patriots had been rumored this offseason to be interested in acquiring Rosen, a first-round pick in 2018 out of UCLA, as a backup to Tom Brady.
Here's Prisco's assessment, via CBS Sports HQ:
Initially, the ownership pushed for Kyler Murray. That much I know, I was told that. The reason they did is they are having a hard time selling tickets. Well, they put it out there. Arizona was lukewarm to it. All of a sudden, they are pulling back and from what I've been told, they are going to go in a different direction. They are not going to draft Kyler Murray.
Prisco now has Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams going No. 1 to Arizona in his mock draft and Murray going No. 4 to the Oakland Raiders. The Patriots? Prisco sees them taking Ohio State receiver Parris Campbell at No. 32 overall

Cards ownership are a joke. Just draft Wlliams let Bosa fall to SF and build around Rosen.

(17,863 posts)I wonder what all this has done to Rosen. I think Williams is the safe pick (I am not sold on Bosa's durability). If they could swing something like trading the #1 for the #4 or #5 and a second round pick, I might consider that trade. Then they draft offensive linemen. Apparently everyone wants to trade down this year, so you probably don't have any dance partners.

1) It is possible for the Cards to have seen Rosen up close and for whatever reason don't see a future with him? Attitude? Physical limitations? Intangibles? Only the coaches know for sure.
2) Rosen needs another year or two under his belt? We've discussed this here before: 15-20 years ago it was standard practice to sit a green QB on the bench and let him learn.
3) Murray? Sorry, but too small for the NFL IMHO to be a pick that high.
4) Want to sell tickets? Just win, baby.
I agree, JonLP24 -- build around Rosen and let him develop.

(29,322 posts)Based on all the scouting reports I read Rosen is a good QB that would draw a lot of interest if he was traded. I think they floated Murray hoping to sell tickets otherwise it is very unusual to move on from a rookie QB after 1 year.
