Winless Redskins fire coach Jay Gruden

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27790170/winless-redskins-fire-coach-jay-gruden

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins fired coach Jay Gruden on Monday in the midst of yet another disappointing season.

Gruden entered the season on the hot seat, and after Sunday's 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots dropped the Redskins to 0-5, it became clear he would not continue as the team's coach beyond this year. Team owner Daniel Snyder and team president Bruce Allen met with Gruden early Monday morning at Redskins Park to deliver the news.

Redskins assistant head coach/offensive line coach Bill Callahan will be the interim head coach, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Apparently, no coach hired by Daniel Snyder has left with a winning record. And some of them have been pretty good coaches.

I have to think this is a problem that won’t be fixed until the team changes ownership. And hopefully the new owner will be receptive to changing the name of the team.

It certainly isn’t skill positions (they even have a rookie QB salary) or defensive backfield. Their O line is a triage unit and I think the tackle is still holding out. Maybe they are tied up with old bad contracts.

Really it all goes back to all the draft picks they gave up for RGIII and Sean Taylor’s incredibly unfortunate death - he was a 10 year don’t worry about this position player. I know that was back in 2008 but still.

. . .as per Deadspin.

Note: Deadspin refers to the team as the "Skins", NOT the Washington (Racial Slurs)

On Sunday, Gruden had morbidly responded to questions about his job by saying, “if the key works Monday I’ll keep working.” That’s not quite how he found out. But it was close!

From the Washington Post:

Gruden was summoned to the team’s facility in Ashburn for a 5 a.m. meeting Monday by owner Daniel Snyder and team president Bruce Allen, who informed him of the decision.
