Related: About this forumSo, it turns out ESPN is amazingly STUPID
There are 4 Grand Slam tennis tournaments in a calendar year. Only 4. It turns out that this year one of them--The Australian Open Men's Final-- falls on the same day as the Super Bowl. (And that's pretty stupid too. I don't know who's in charge of that.)
I'm pretty die-hard when it comes to watching these Grand Slam events, so I will be awake at 3:30 am to watch the Men's Championship.
Most people won't be. ESPN obviously recognizes this, so they replay the match at a more reasonable time of day.
What on earth made them decide to air the re-broadcast of this Grand Slam Championship match at 6:00 pm???????
It's bad enough that to watch the match, you either have to have cable, or you have to have internet.
The only way to see both the match and the Super Bowl is to either get up at 3:30 am to watch the tennis, or to try to watch the football at the same time as you're trying to watch the tennis (by having 2 TVs or an internet connection.)

(32,006 posts)My husband has 2 TVs in the same room and he almost always watches 2 different things at the same time - two sporting events, or a sporting event and a movie. Drives me crazy.

(34,111 posts)but don't we get the final on Saturday? We are a day and some hours different. What I am watching is dated for me but dated for them the next day? I don't know if that makes sense or not.
If the final is on Sunday in Australia we will see it in the US on Saturday? Right? This whole mess confuses me.
Edit I re-read your post. I agree they are stupid.

I've been getting up to watch it for years.

(34,111 posts)Federer. I guess I would rather do that than find out what happened before I could watch it when ESPN would show it.

(38,562 posts)However, for those that don't mind waiting for the replay, why not air the replay at a time that doesn't conflict w/ the SB?

(34,111 posts)I don't think they really care much about it, especially now since none of the contenders from the US outside of Serena is likely to win much. Get a couple from each sex, women will not interest them alone, and they might do better.

(38,562 posts)We don't have cable or DVR. Not sure about this, but I'm willing to bet that the streaming function on the ESPN website won't allow me to record.
But it's not really about me. I WILL be awake to watch it.
I just question the logic behind making this event compete with the Super Bowl for viewership.
That is one of the solutions. I will definitely be recording it. Ive done that for the whole tourney because I cant stay up all night and watch.
Also, you can download the ESPN app and watch it streaming OnDemand.
If you have a smart TV you can add the app or just cast it from your phone/iPad.
The replays are normally up as soon as the match ends.

(2,343 posts)don't watch the super bowl? I stopped watching nfl when it was clear the owners weren't going to stick up for the players when dumbass donnie started calling them sons of bitches for kneeling for the anthem. Plus, the damn game is too slow. The clock stops entirely too much. No reason for a game to last 3 1/2 hours.

(38,562 posts)Last game until August... yeah, I'm watching.
And hoping for some clever commercials too

(38,562 posts)In order to watch it on their website you have to sign up and pay a monthly subscription fee.
SUCKS!

(1,287 posts)up for a month is only $10. Then then just cancel it.
Also, I think the show courts at the slams you can watch for free on ESPN3. Only lesser courts you have to pay for to be able to see on ESPN3. At least that is how its been all along since they made it a paid service for all the outer courts. It used to all be free.
