Related: About this forumMy prediction for Peyton Manning...............
I've seen it a thousand times in the NFL.
A long time legend joins another team and flames out spectacularly.
There have been exceptions. Montana didn't do half bad in KC---but he clearly wasn't the Joe of old times.
Here's the thing about Manning.
Dude had major surgery on his neck...4 to be exact. The most serious was the cervical fusion.
Guys---that's some serious shit.
Now---if he was a young pup a couple of years into the league... I'd give him a better chance to come back strong.
But he is not---dude is football old at 36.
This is what I think will happen.
Manning will be efficient this season and no more---and he won't be close to the Peyton Manning that has a career rating of 94.9.
And here's my bold prediction. He will go down hard by mid-season and either miss the rest of the season, or most of it.
Why?
Because guy's like Marino, Favre, Manning, ---they don't get sacked for one reason----instinct and the step-up and sideways movement in the pocket.
When Marino lost that ability---he was done. ---I think Manning will lose it just like Marino.
Then again---who the fuck really knows.

(27,711 posts)I don't get why Denver crapped all over Tebow who is young, still developing, and popular with the fan base. I think they overpaid and I think he'll get hurt again. I'm just happy the 49ers didn't sign him - All this really proved is that John Elway is a dumbass. I liked Tim Tebow for Denver, flame away.

(41,692 posts)and if I was Elway I would have pulled the same move.
Tebow is not a good NFL quarterback and will never develop into one.
Lot's of people in the know including arm chair quarterbacks who have watched football for years--- Tebow just doesn't have it.
Watch what he goes for on the market. If the Broncos are lucky to get a 4th pick in the draft---well--- that right there shows you what football people---GM's think of Tim Tebow.
Tebow is unconventional. Also, he looked pretty damn good going 7-4 last year and beating the Steelers in the playoffs.
He's not a prima donna type throw first quarterback, but he can run, he's tough, and he keeps the other team guessing. Tebow is humble and no grumble, where I come from that's a virtue (and don't give me that religion crap, players were praying on the field long before Tebow).
I think Tebow is probably worth a mid-high first round pick and a role player or two/or more draft picks.

(27,711 posts)There's no guarantee RG3 is going to perform better. He's no Ryan Leaf.
On edit: they probably won't get much for him, but if I needed a QB, I'd take a flier. The draft beyond the top two QB's this year is weak.

(65,042 posts)No he didn't. He compiled the worst passing stats in the league. If not for some braincramping by the coaches of the Raiders, Chiefs, Dolphins, and Bears they would have gone 3 and 8. And, they beat the Bears when they were without their starting QB and RB.
When he played against smart defenses, the Broncos got stomped.

(27,711 posts)...I would say there are a lot of good QB's in the league, but Tebow isn't the worst QB to start against the NFL and there are a number of dominant defenses where it doesn't really matter.

(35,773 posts)The rest of the Broncos looked good. That's why they went after Manning. They have a decent team.
Last year, I kept asking if any of any other team wanted Tebow for their starting QB.
No one wanted that.
Tebow isn't a starting QB. End of discussion.

(29,322 posts)in the contract to financially protect the Broncos if something happens related to his neck. They did see him workout, throw so they were happy with what they saw and passed the physical portion. Of course they overpaid, with so many teams in the mix it comes down to do you want Manning or not? If the answer is yes you have to outbid the others. Plus the Broncos have a large amount of cap space.
With Denver as my favorite AFC team, I'm happy. I'm also glad it keeps them far away from Tebow as the future of this team.
ellisonz
(27,711 posts)...but they're still taking a big risk. I would have kept Tebow and improved the Denver o-line and receiving corps. But that's just me, I don't care about religion, I care about winning.

(27,711 posts)I think a lot of posters at DU dislike Tim Tebow simply because of his religion and not anything to do with his performance on the field.
HuckleB
(35,773 posts)Most DUers are smart enough to separate the two.

They are going to miss Tebow when Manning goes down with another neck injury.

Well OK then...good luck with that.

(22,340 posts)He might make a good Tight End (I'm assuming he has good hands). But seriously, religious fanaticism aside, he SUCKS as a passer. You HAVE to admit that.

(11,489 posts)It seemed like he was sitting in there for 5 minutes sometimes.
The reason Manning is so good is because he can read defenses and hit the open man quickly. Denver's o-line will give him all the time he needs. I don't think he'll be getting hit all that often.
They will, however, still need a decent running back.

(41,692 posts)new Manning is old--- and his mobility will be diminished. MHO

(56,177 posts)2010 season...clearly he was on the decline then, even before his surgery...fortunate for him Elway's an idiot.

(21,716 posts)He is used to a domed stadium. The snow will not be good for his neck

(16,113 posts)Broncos miss the playoffs, and Manning's health concerns coupled with diminished arm strength and a new offense have him out of the league by the following year.
For the Broncos, still a "smart" signing for one reason. Tebow isn't "the guy" and he's likely not going to develop into "the guy", but he is very popular in Denver, which means they'd be saddled with him for several years. Now, they can get Tebow out AND still make the fans happy. Before the end of the year, they're already looking for Manning's replacement, but Tebow is gone somewhere else, so they're free to make whatever move they want to.

with the Vikings. That's hardly a flameout. OK, the next year, different story.
