NIU linebacker Jamaal Bass indicted on assault charge in Ohio

Northern Illinois linebacker Jamaal Bass will have to face the music in criminal court for making contact with two members of the University of Toledo marching band last fall.

Bass was indicted Friday by a grand jury in Lucas County, Ohio, on one count of felony assault and one count of misdemeanor assault,
according to a report Monday in the Toledo Blade. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison, the report said. An arraignment date hasn’t been set.

The incident happened as the Huskies took the field and the band was exiting. The Blade report said tape from the nationally televised game appears to show Bass jumping shoulder-first into one of the band members and knocking over another.

‘‘As the legal proceedings in Toledo involving NIU football player Jamaal Bass are ongoing, we will reserve any comment until that process is complete,’’ NIU athletic director Jeff Compher said in a statement released by the school. ‘‘Jamaal is currently enrolled at [NIU], and his status with the football program has not changed.’’
