The 49ers agreed to terms Wednesday with short-yardage back Brandon Jacobs, formerly of the New York Giants, to compliment Frank Gore, according to an ESPN report.
Jacobs (6-foot-4, 264 pounds) is a seven-year veteran who had 571 yards (3.8-yard average) and seven touchdowns last season as the Giants' No. 2 running back behind Ahmad Bradshaw in the regular season.
Jacobs agreed to a one-year deal for a maximum of more than $2 million if he tops out his incentives, the New York Daily News reported. The Giants released Jacobs this month, rather than pay him $4.9 million, including a $500,000 roster bonus.

Suddenly players want to come to the 49ers again...and who can blame them? Thank you Jim Harbaugh.
However, I do agree with Jerry Rice who says Jacobs runs "soft" for his size...but he sure could come in handy as a Gore backup and in short yardage and red zone situations ..

(27,711 posts)I'm liking the Niners for next year. Gore did start to get beat up and he's more of a sort of finesse back than a power back.

(9,709 posts)particularly the way they've bolstered the receiving corps. Going into next year, the 49ers can match up with anybody. A new stadium is opening up in 2014. The good times are back...

(31,207 posts)I expected them to look in the draft.
I'm okay if he can't break away from tacklers as long as he can convert short yardage situations to first downs.

(9,709 posts)and doesn't Jacobs fill exactly the same need as Anthony Dixon? Of course, Dixon has been a disappointment overall...and it seems I remember him getting stuffed on a key 4th down in the NFC Championship. A trio of Gore, Hunter and Jacobs doesn't sound too bad..
Just saw a stat...of Jacobs 56 career rushing touchdowns, 35 came on runs of three yards or less. That's just what the 49ers need. They settled for a lot of FG last when only a couple yards away..

(31,207 posts)is that they're getting veterans to fill key positions instead of relying on the draft. Okay, so they're not huge names but the learning curve from college to pro isn't a factor -- they can step in and play. That's exactly what they need from the receivers they inked (Moss, Ginn, etc) and Jacobs. The final pieces will be Snyder's position and the (hopefully) improving Alex Smith.
