I include retained and buried salaries since they can represent (IMO) the advantage of speculative and/or reckless decisions that larger market teams (and teams with favorable media contracts), operating without a true spending cap, are able to take with near impunity.

make a donation? Those poor Oakland A's need a few bucks!

The Dodgers would rate much higher if they hadn't been allowed to defer almost all of Shoehei Ohtani's salary for 10 years. He's making $2 million per season until 2034, then he starts getting paid $68 million annually until 2043. It shouldn't be allowed, IMO.

The dodgers deferred a ton of the money they are paying to Shohei and others.

Without nba or NFL style revenue sharing, MLB will have the same 10 ish teams winning with 10 being basically glorified farm teams.

As a reds fan, it is disappointing to know that we have zero chance of sustainable success with that payroll.

That'll be my championship -- probably more obtainable than an A.L. Wild Card.

It was tough enough to win against big markets like Houston, Texas, N.Y. Yankees, Boston, Toronto on a yearly basis, but now Cleveland must face L.A. Dodgers, N.Y. Mets, Phillies, Braves, San Diego and San Francisco as well.

I’m a Brewers fan, and have adjusted my hopes similarly… it’s all about winning the division. Anything beyond that would be gravy (but there hasn’t been any gravy in several years, despite making the playoffs in most years recently).

… to compare last year’s team payroll to the number of regular season wins they achieved. Pretty sure the Mets had the highest $/win ratio, given that they were one of the teams with the highest payroll… and they basically sucked on the field.

I know the Ohtani contract pushes tons of money into the distant future, but with him, Betts, Freeman, et al, I sure didn't expect their load to be only $2.5 million higher than the Cubs.
Naturally, Oakland is leading the league in steals. Per Statista, their revenues (lowest in MLB) was $212 million!

Then again, I cannot blame the fans for not supporting that horrid product on the field.
