One could make the argument he would have made it into the Baseball Hall of Fame if he didn't spend his potentially most productive years in the Navy.
He had a cool 34-game hitting streak going in 1949 (it remains a Red Sox record). His streak ended when a damned Yankee center fielder caught a fly that should have dropped in for a hit. The center fielder was his brother, Joe.
