Giants’ familiar formula carries day in Game 1
WASHINGTON No matter what storylines the mind can conjure for a postseason game, the real tale almost always comes down to pitching. The Giants have nailed down the formula since 2010 and did it again in a 3-2 victory in Game 1 of their Division Series against the Nationals.
Jake Peavy pitched shutout ball for 5 2/3 innings and held the Nationals to two hits for his first career postseason win. He outpitched friend and San Diego neighbor Stephen Strasburg, who allowed two runs in five-plus innings in his first postseason start.
Hunter Strickland and Sergio Romo each made huge pitches to help the Giants win their ninth consecutive postseason game. During the streak, they have outscored the Cardinals, Tigers, Pirates and Nationals 47-9.
Joe Panik, Brandon Crawford and Buster Posey drove in the Giants runs with singles.
