Making lunch, looking out my kitchen window, and saw this.....

...munching on the ripe berries on our ornamental cherry tree. Made my day! (too the picture through the window over sink - would have scared it away if I went out onto the deck!)

They are beautiful creatures. We occasionally have some, but usually we get the smaller woodpeckers (Downy, hairy, and red-bellied)

RIPE cherries? Oh, wait, ripe berries on ornamental cherry. But still...tiny little fruits here waiting waiting waiting for warmer nights.

I love pileateds, sometimes have one fly through our wood or we hear the rat tat tat tat.

but I forgot to source them (whole foods, costco)....they've not been all that good - not crisp/firm enough, and some moldy ones as well.

nothing like "made to last" ones too. I haven't seen cherries yet, think it'll be a bit. The babies wave hi to you.

I had an apartment in Houston that faced a woods. I was on the second floor and had a balcony looking into the woods. I had the privilege of seeing a Pileated Woodpecker nesting hole from the balcony and watched that pair raise their babies. I could not have been more honored.

Unfortunately it is dusk, so I can't get a good picture.

I have a pile of old firewood he's poking at. I bet there are some tasty bugs in there.
