Public land target practice? (montana)

Having recently moved from ND to MT, I have very little knowledge regarding public land and what shooting activities are allowed on it. I have direct access to national forest on three sides of my home, and would appreciate any shared knowledge regarding what is and is not allowed and also what if any permits are required. I had year round shooting on my own property in ND, and am now renting a place with no shooting allowed. I rarely went a day without pulling a trigger and am starting to miss it.

If this thread is not allowed here, let me know and I will gladly delete it.

Thank you in advance,
Mog

Some national forests allow shooting in designated areas, but you may have to inquire locally. Eleanors38 Jul 2016 #1

For years, Sam Houston National Forest had a shotgun range, but I did not see a pistol or rifle range.
