Related: About this forumPope Francis sets up Vatican child sex abuse committee
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-252357245 December 2013 Last updated at 16:16 GMT
Pope Francis has said dealing with sex abuse is vital for the Church's credibility.
Pope Francis is to set up a Vatican committee to fight sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church and offer help to victims.
The announcement, by the archbishop of Boston, follows a meeting between the Pope and his eight cardinal advisers.
It comes days after the Vatican refused a UN request for information on alleged abuse by priests, nuns or monks.
One of the main Italian associations of clerical abuse survivors has said it has "little trust" in the Vatican.

I hope that this will focus on the victims and greater transparency within the church.

(13,029 posts)1. Cue more fawning praise for this pope and the Vatican
For making a superficial start on what they should have been doing many decades ago, if they had any of the god-given morality and decency that they claim.
Maybe when they start coming clean..totally, completely clean..about ALL credible accusations of sexual abuse by priests that have happened in the past, as well as all attempts by church personnel to cover up and abet those crimes, they will warrant being taken seriously. Until then, this is just more PR.

As opposed to anything else his church has done on the issue so far - without being legally forced to do so.
