Related: About this forumCan the UN Change the Church's Views on Abortion and Gay Rights?
http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/02/can-the-un-change-the-churchs-views-on-abortion-and-gay-rights/283642/On Wednesday, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child issued a long report on the Vatican that has gotten attention for its sharp criticism of the Catholic Churchs response to clergy sex-abuse scandals. But perhaps more remarkably, the study also critiqued the Churchs stance on abortion and birth control.
Specifically, it recommended that the Holy See overcome all the barriers and taboos surrounding adolescent sexuality that hinder their access to sexual and reproductive information, including on family planning and contraceptives, and suggested the Vatican review its position on abortion with a view to identifying circumstances under which access to abortion services can be permitted. The committee also made broad criticisms of the Churchs posture toward LGBTQ families and children. The Holy See has responded with a statement defending the Churchs right to define its own religious beliefs and teachings.
The Vatican, which has permanent observer status at the UN, is a signatory to the UNs 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child along with 193 countries and two island nations. Notably, the United States is one of three countries that havent ratified the treaty; the other two, Somalia and South Sudan, have both pledged to ratify the agreement soon.
So, if a UN committee finds Church teachings to violate the human rights of children, what can it do to the Holy See? The short answer: nothing.

(49,533 posts)1. When the church has changed before,
it has generally done so when forced by the secular world moving too far ahead of it. Hopefully we will see the RCC embrace tolerance, acceptance, and equality.
