After WWI, Giovannino Guareschi wrote several hundred short stories featuring two former anti-fascist partisans in a small Italian town, the parish priest don Camillo and the communist town mayor Peppone. The BBC episodes run about 30 minutes

We read them as teenagers, my parents had a couple books. Don Camillo and Pogo made up a fair chunk of their political, and ironic, readings.
