Holy Bible clears first hurdle to becoming Louisiana's official state book

The Louisiana Legislature is considering declaring the Holy Bible the official state book of Louisiana.

Legislation that would make the Holy Bible the official state book of Louisiana cleared the House Committee on Municipal, Parochial and Cultural Affairs with a vote of 8-5 Thursday afternoon. It will now head to the full House of Representatives for consideration.

Rep. Thomas Carmody, R-Shreveport, originally filed a bill to declare a specific copy of the Bible, found in the Louisiana State Museum system, the official state book. But by the time he presented the proposal to the committee, he changed language in his legislation to make the generic King James version of the Bible, a text used worldwide, the official state book.

Carmody said his intention was not to mingle religion with government functions. "This is not about establishing an official religion," he said.

Still, Legislators became concerned that the proposal wasn't broad enough and did not reflect the breadth of Bibles used by religious communities. In particular, some lawmakers worried that singling out the King James version of the Bible would not properly reflect the culture of Louisiana. The Catholic Church, for example, does not use the King James text.

Agree. I don't think it has a prayer of standing (pun intended). cbayer Apr 2014 #8

Only steal from the best.

In this case it was Dorothy Parker.

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
a medley of extemporanea,
And love is a thing that can never go wrong,
and I am Marie of Romania.

Love her.

8 years.

Something dramatic has happened in the legislature and it makes me wonder whether Katrina had something to do with it.

New Orleans lost so many people and was an area that could reliably be counted on to send good liberals to Baton Rouge.

I'm interested in whether that changed and the religious right just saw a vacuum and filled it.

But I agree that Katrina may have had something to do with it. In Detroit of my youth, when they built the first expressways through the city, the city called it urban renewal. We called it urban removal, something the GOP has been doing again now in Detroit for a few years.

It never changes. Sometimes it all becomes fairly transparent.

Hope you're well.

back to having at least some semblance of sanity.

All is well. On a road trip through Mexico, so not around much.

Hope you are thawing out.

for wanting to fight things like the printing of "In God We Trust" on our currency, or religious monuments on public land. They have been told that these things don't harm anyone, they're just symbolic, etc., etc., and therefore quit whining and focus on the blatant violations.

So I ask - is this a blatant violation? Are we allowed to be upset about it and fight it?

We have been in some amazing places, including some outstanding Mayan ruins. We've hit about 10 different states in Mexico and spent a few days in Belize.

I think I could write a whole book just about the border crossings.

Today we made the ½ way turnaround back to the boat, but still have much to see. One highlight will will a home stay in Oaxaca where we will really get to learn about the culture.

Anyway, I hope you get the chance to make trips of your dreams in the future. It teaches you so much about other people, their basic goodness and what is really important in life.

Hope you are well. Very sorry to see you resign, but I certainly understand why. I also felt tremendous relief when I resigned. You did an excellent and admirable job.
