The Labour leader, who is visiting family with his wife Justine, said that he believed faith has a "nourishing" role in society.
He also said that Britain was "lucky" to have the Church of England, calling it a "great institution".
Former Conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli was born Jewish but became an Anglican at 12 after his father left Judaism following a dispute with the synagogue.
Mr Miliband said: "Someone asked me if I thought it was a disadvantage, that people would be less likely to vote for me because Im Jewish, and I said absolutely not.

(41,208 posts)Ed Miliband has revealed that his relationship with the Jewish community has grown and deepened in the years since he became leader of the Labour Party.
He told guests at the Community Security Trusts annual dinner on Wednesday: I feel more part of the Jewish community than at any other time in my life....
There was further praise for the extraordinary contribution of British Jews to every part of our society. ...
(And more at link).
It should be remembered that the Express is one of our most right-wing tabloids and hates Miliband and all things Labour.
Disraeli was ethnically Jewish, but was a convert to Christianity, and did not identify with Jewish culture, so it is a little ambiguous whether he would have called himself a 'Jewish Prime Minister'. Miliband is atheist/agnostic, but identifies culturally with Jews to a far greater extent than Disraeli did.
Hope he gets to be Prime Minister next year! (because he's Labour, not because he's atheist and ethnically Jewish, though I am all three of these things)

(41,208 posts)Pandering for the religious vote is not nearly as key to political success in the UK as it seems to be in the USA. Jews (not all of whom are religious) constitute just half a percent of the British population. As regards religion more broadly, a recent survey indicated that less than 10 per cent of people in England and Wales had attended a religious service in the past week, and less than 40% had done so in the past year.
What Miliband might indeed be trying to do is to emphasize (a) his 'human' side and (b) his foreign policy credentials. He is often portrayed by the media as 'weird' (which he isn't),relatively inexperienced (which he is, but so are the other Party leaders!), and lacking in detailed policies (ditto!)
