If Good Friday is the day that Jesus was crucified, then why is it regarded as "good" by Christians?

Some suggest the term comes from calling this a "good" or "holy" day. Others that "good" is a corruption of "God."

Other might suggest that Jesus dying is "good," in that it saves us (cf. substitutionary atonement).

On the other hand though? We curiously end up calling the day that Jesus was killed, good.

Not sure what this says about the psychology of believers. And/or the accuracy of their language.

Any speculations?

"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Even Herod. Even Pilate. Even Judas. Even Peter. Even me.

While today is sad and a mourning day we do live in the knowledge that Easter is just around the corner and that he is always risen.
