No religion

The Department of Education did something I had requested of one of the undersecretaries more than a year ago. They revised their vision statement to remove the term “God-loving.”

Department Order No. 36 issued last September 4, 2013, shows the new vision statement as: “We dream of Filipinos who passionately love their country and whose values and competencies enable them to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to building the nation.” The old vision statement was “By 2030, DepEd is globally recognized for good governance and for developing functionally-literate and God-loving Filipinos.”

I am sure that the change was not made because of my timid request at a forum about some unrelated topic. It may have been made because of the request of the Filipino Freethinkers who wrote a formal but still polite request to the Department of Education . (A pause for ethical disclosure. I am a senior adviser of the Filipino Freethinkers.)

I suggest that people read the letter of the Filipino Freethinkers. They may wish to verify whether the tone was indeed respectful. The letter also cites provisions of our Constitution that make the request, in my mind, reasonable and lawful.

... for them to even consider adding "God-loving" to the mission statement document.
Keep up the good work.

of an atheist pulling this shit. My non-relationship with a being no one has proven to exist is more important to me than evangelizing about it. Why can't the religious respect anyone else's rights?

Everybody would be allot better off if they would mind their own damn business and get their noses out of everyone elses'. The only beef I have with religious zealots is when they cram their religion down my throat. They need to keep it in the church.
This is not a theocracy. And if it turns into one, I'm out of here...

because they were respecting other people's rights.

Did you miss that part in your race to find something to attack?

until it is pointed out to them. I suspect that has happened to you, though you might be reluctant to admit it.

Are you really unable to give these people credit for doing the right thing and just fault them for not doing it fast enough?

7. I would never again trust a public servant that tried to pull something like that.

The Philippine constitution's bill of rights specifies:

No law shall be made respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference, shall forever be allowed. No religious test shall be required for the exercise of civil or political rights.

Sounds familiar. What would you think if the US Dept. Of Education tried the same thing?

(Article is unclear, but my impression is the phrase was added recently?)

8. I agree that it is unclear, but what is important is that it was resolved

and apparently resolved with a great deal of civility and respect all around.

What would I think? I would think it was wrong and I would be glad to see it resolved. I would also understand that it is probably never going to go that smoothly here because the outrage and animosity on both sides of the fence would not permit it.

Is this really that big a deal? It's about a short phrase in an innocuous document in the Philippines. If anything, it's a victory. Why try to make it into something more?

9. I have a zero tolerance policy for public servants behaving in this manner.

Call it a character flaw, if you wish.

I will grant, it is nice to see something resolved amicably enough that it didn't need to go to court.

I have very little, but not zero, tolerance for people who judge others without knowing the whole story.

I tend to think of it as an asset.

Government officials have a clear specification to adhere to in this case. In the private sector, it can be more of a grey area. There is no nuance here. This was a very black and white issue, which happens to be my favorite sort.

than not. Black and white does not hold much appeal for me, but it takes all kinds.

I see my post generated some replies. The only thing I can't figure out is how it got here. I intended my response to go to this thread:
