More than 1,900 people have now died in West Africa's Ebola outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.
There have been 3,500 confirmed or probable cases in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
"The outbreaks are racing ahead of the control efforts in these countries," WHO chief Margaret Chan said.
The WHO is meeting on Thursday to examine the most promising treatments and to discuss how to fast-track testing and production.

(4,192 posts)"God's will" has been used as the escape clause far too many times. Yet religious people continue to use it over and over to explain away all sorts of evils. And it's the exact reason I am repulsed by the incredible amount of energy people put into worshipping such a God.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

(13,496 posts)I get why it pisses you off that people praise God rather than the doctors and the people who worked tirelessly to save him. I really do. But, it's just using a deadly outbreak of a horrific disease to say: "Gotcha, assholes."
And if any of the people suffering believe and pray, and it gives them peace, good for them. Going through something so horrible, anything that gives them peace or comfort is a good thing.

(49,533 posts)or certainly bad things about Richard Dawkins - are often posted to say "Gotcha, assholes" too.
Now other threads on this very topic - particularly when Dr. Brantly had his press conference - noted the major frustrating point about this phenomenon (thanking god for being cured/spared/etc.): how does it make the families of victims feel? That their loved ones weren't as important? Weren't as loved? I think it's a horrible message to send, that those who survive were favored or chosen by god. It smacks of the Prosperity Gospel bullshit that's so popular now - "if I'm rich it must be because god blessed me!"

(13,496 posts)I see them and don't generally post in them. I have said in one (that was locked shortly thereafter) that I thought it was BS, too.
I understand why people hate what Dr. Brantly said, and the arguments had sway with me. But this OP didn't. It annoyed me. But Warren has the right to express it, I suppose. But 1900 deaths is tragic.

(48,181 posts)the vile implications of what. Brantly and the rest of the intercessionary god crowd are saying. Had I posted this in gd, you would have a point. In here you are just demanding special treatment.

(13,496 posts)I just said this is the shit I hate. Expressing my opinion. I hate when things are used to score points. In either direction. I call it as I see it. (And yes, I see it through the lens of my life experience, but i think I'm generally pretty fair.)
I'm certainly not demanding you remove the post or take it down. Or alerting on it. Just expressing why it bugs me.
