Leader of Irish Catholic church retires

The leader of the Irish Catholic church, who resisted calls to resign when details emerged of a secret deal between the church, child sex abuse victims and one of the country's most notorious paedophile priests, has announced his retirement.

...

Brady's reign as the spiritual leader of Ireland's 4 million Catholics was marred by revelations that he played a part in a clandestine deal to silence two young victims of Father Brendan Smyth.

Brady was the church's note-taker during the meeting with the two victims, who were encouraged to swear oaths of secrecy about Smyth's abuse. Smyth went on to abuse dozens of other children across Ireland and even the United States until he was finally unmasked as a serial paedophile in the early 1990s.

So he helped cover up for a sexual abuser of children, who thanks to the cover-up "went on to abuse dozens of other children." But he's got this going for him, which is nice:

Martin praised Brady for "his tireless commitment to representing the Catholic church in Ireland at countless national and international engagements".

is what likely motivated him to cover up the horrible crimes in the first place.

A faintly damning praise. The horrors.

Something seriously fucked up about that Org.

Edit: If someone on my team at work didn't say/do anything about the uncovering of criminal wrongdoing at a meeting, even if they were only taking notes, that person would be a scorched crater when it came to light. There's no fucking way.

Here, you get punished for NOT whistleblowing, and evidence of said wrongdoing is cheerfully supplied to the local authorities.

Cover up unspeakable crimes, allow the perp to commit more of them, and when it all finally catches up with you in your old age...

...go enjoy a nice, quiet retirement where all your basic needs will be met. Quite possibly in lovely Rome, Italy.

If only all the children who were raped thanks to his (in)actions could have it so good.
