Cult of the Drunken Wookiee: Mardi Gras krewe founds new religion

A group of friends in New Orleans started a religion to worship Chewbacchus, an amalgamation of Han Solo's co-pilot from Star Wars and the Roman god of wine and revelry. 'We got tax exempt status like any other church or charitable non-profit organization,' a high priest for the cult said.

Pray it up, fuzzball.

A rogue squadron of Star Wars super-fans in New Orleans created a new "religion" to worship a fictional character from far, far away.

The Cult of the Drunken Wookiee grew out of the Krewe of Chewbaccus, a science-fiction themed Mardi Gras parade group.

"We worship Chewbacchus. We made him up. We pulled him from the ether of existence. We scooped him out of the zeitgeist and manifest him here on Earth for our own pleasure," high priest Ryan Ballard told the Daily News.

Many of them have themes from greek and roman mythology. Pretty much all of them spoof monarchies.

As opposed to ridicule, it's a spoof and not meant to offend religious people at all.

If you haven't done New Orleans, that might be hard to understand, but there is a big difference.
