Though “religious voters” are typically associated with the Republican party and conservative principles, that hasn’t always been the case.

In fact, the association of Christianity with Republicans is a fairly new phenomenon – one that primarily started with the presidential campaign of Ronald Reagan.

University of West Georgia History Professor Dr. Daniel Williams, a Coweta resident, spoke on "Christianity and Politics in Recent American History: The Religious Left and the Religious Right” Thursday at the historic train depot in downtown Newnan. The lecture was sponsored by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society.

“A lot of people have the perception that religion and politics is divisive because, on one hand we have secular-minded people and on the other hand, people who want to put their religion into politics,” Williams said.
