Related: About this forumRichard Thompson: "Outside of the Inside"
Thompson is a practicing Sufi Muslim. A lot of his work touches on the darker side of religion.
God never listened to Charlie Parker
Charlie Parker lived in vain
Blasphemer, womanizer
Let a needle numb his brain
Wash away his monkey music
Damn his demons, damn his pain
And what's the point of Albert Einstein
What do we need Physics for'
Heresy's his inspiration
Corrupt and rotten to the core
Curse his devious mathematics
Curse his deadly atom war
there's a message on the wind
Calling me to glory somewhere
There are signs too deep for the dumb
Like perfume in the air
And when I get to Heaven
I won't realize that I'm there
Shakespeare, Isaac Newton
Small ideas for little boys
Adding to the senseless chatter
Adding to the background noise
Hard to hear my oratory
Hard to hear my inner voice
Van Gogh, Botticelli
Scraping paint onto a board
Color is the fuel of madness
That's no way to praise the Lord
Gray's the color of the pious
Knelt upon the misery cord
there's a message on the wind
Calling me to glory somewhere
There are signs too deep for the dumb
Like perfume in the air
And when I get to Heaven
I won't realize that I'm there
I'm familiar with the cover
I don't need to read the book
I police the world of action
Inside's where I can never look
Got no time to help the worthless
Lotus-eaters, Mandarins, crooks
there's a message on the wind
Calling me to glory somewhere
There are signs too deep for the dumb
Like perfume in the air
And when I get to Heaven
I won't realize that I'm there

(7,753 posts)1. Yes, but he has a sense of humour about it.
I remember him introducing this song at a gig with, "Are there any Muslim fundamentalists here tonight - apart from me, of course?" I don't think he's a friend to any god. Too smart. Also check "Dad's Gonna Kill Me" - the dad of course is Baghdad.

Do you have even a shred of evidence to back that up? Anything at all?
Or is that just a belief based on you own biases and founded on faith?
C'mon give me some of that rational reason!

(3,127 posts)3. I agree about his sense of humor.
I've seen him live a couple times, once with the full band and another time with Danny Thompson. And I think that his "belief" isn't all that different than my un-belief.
