WITHOUT Christmas I would be empty at this time of the year. As a child, in the 1950s, I saw my father, now 94, as the man who made Christmas come alive in the lives of my sisters, my brothers, and my mother, who my father adored to a fault.
Out of eight children I have no idea why I am the only one who is prepared to admit being atheist. I attended Kingston College (KC), a strong Anglican school where every morning we had to attend "Chapel" to hear the headmaster tell us not only where we went wrong but how good we were at what we were doing, plus the route we needed to take to be even better than we were.
But, of course, there would always be a sermon which, like Sunday school at Olivet Gospel Hall on Waltham Park Road, I found not just utterly boring, but totally meaningless. At KC, towards the end of chapel, we were required to say, en masse, The Apostle's Creed: "I believe in the God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth..." even as we were studying the hard sciences.
While I suffered that particular boredom at KC, I found joy in that once-every-year revival of happiness -- getting a plastic gun, plastic bullets, and a full cowboy outfit for my Christmas present, along with my father lighting and bursting squibs, teaching us the safe way to do the same, and seeing my brothers and sisters enjoying themselves.

"Being so close to the American continent we had bought into its idea of 'white Christmas' long before we grew up and knew that it was just another cultural importation."

(39,374 posts)You just cost me 99 cents, or $1.29. Gotta have it.
Marley does with dreams there what the Temps did with peace. Let others sing of snow, I will sing of dreams. And the Temps, that Silent Night will put your worried mind at ease. These songs are timeless and work on so many levels. Perfect for covers. This is the ultimate validation of Christmas for me; no single occasion has inspired more great music.
that was really sweet.

(146,218 posts)I carried on many of the traditions with my own kids, even though we weren't affiliated with a church.
This is a great story that brings back many, many fond memories.

(3,829 posts)and Christmas is mostly a secular holiday with many non-Christian practices. Christmas is part of our culture and it doesn't belong to Christians. People of all religious beliefs should be happy to celebrate this holiday, despite what some selfish religious believers claim who want to claim the holiday as their own.
I doubt I will get any argument on DU. This isn't FOX News.

(146,218 posts)secular aspects that people around the world share.
The whole war on christmas thing is a blatant inability to share, something most people learn in kindergarten.
I will be spending the day with friends, eating and drinking and laughing and talking to/about the new child that will be entering our community within the next 3-4 weeks.
How about you?
I'm alone in Florida, and my family and people I know are in California. I'll see them in California a few weeks after Christmas, so it's all good. I'm looking forward to it.
