http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/23/us-usa-ohio-zombie-idUSKBN0K11O920141223(Reuters) - A suburban Cincinnati man's zombie-themed Nativity scene has caused quite a stir in his neighborhood, with some considering it a holiday treat. But others see a nightmare before Christmas.
Responding to two anonymous complaints, officials in Ohio's Sycamore Township said on Tuesday they have ordered Jasen Dixon to take down his display by Friday because it violates local property maintenance codes.
Dixon, who manages a haunted attraction in Indiana, faces a $1,000 fine if he does not remove the 10-foot by 10-foot structure he built three weeks ago.
He said he made the models for the zombie Mary and three wise men and borrowed props to make the Joseph and Jesus zombie figures. The baby Jesus is pale with totally white eyes, while the other life-sized figures are partly skeletal.

(33,982 posts)"A martyr (Greek: ?ά????, mártys, "witness"; stem ?ά????-, mártyr-) is somebody who suffers persecution and/or death for advocating, renouncing, refusing to renounce, and/or refusing to advocate a belief or cause of either a religious or secular nature. Most martyrs are considered holy or are respected by their followers, becoming a symbol of exceptional leadership and heroism. Martyrs play significant roles in religions such as Christianity, Mormonism, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Bahá'í Faith, and Sikhism. Similarly, martyrs have had notable effects in secular life, including specific figures such as Socrates, as well as in politics and Chinese culture."
If he is issued fines by the city where no one else with a similar display is issued fines, singling him out for selective punishment for his beliefs, then he fits the mold.

(11,573 posts)I'd think the pertinent question is whether advertising displays are permissible under his city's zoning ordinances.

(33,982 posts)Is he advertising? Name of company/haunted house displayed anywhere, etc?

(11,573 posts)the homeowner runs a "haunted attraction" as a business. Since there's no picture at your link, I have no idea what is visible.
It comes down to local ordinances.

I didn't see any advertising.

Maybe it is just the article but it sounds like this man got a lot of support from the community.
I guess, based on the fact that he operates a haunted house type attraction thingy in the town, it was probably expected by many. You wouldn't expect a normal nativity scene at a haunted house would you?
Sounds more like he was keeping the attractions theme while at the same time trying to celebrate the season rather than insult people.
But, I could be wrong. I haven't seen it, nor do I know him, and I am relying on the link for my info. I just don't get the impression that it was meant to offend.[/font]

(12,754 posts)You can't compare it to Kenny Irwin's Robo Lights display here in Palm Springs
http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/robo-lights
Since 1986, Kenny Irwin Jr. has been building the sci-fi holiday spectacle which has turned into a year-round event viewable from the street, although it's during the winter season that Robo Lights really comes to life with millions of lights and public access to the whole celebration.
There's a post-apocalyptic scene with "nuclear elves" in the tennis court, and Santa's sleigh, aka his "battle wagon," is pulled by a team of 12 robotic reindeer, while nearby the wise men come laden with microwaves. One robot stands 50 feet tall, and others have microwaves or other bits of found materials embedded in their chests in this ever-growing alien landscape of outside art.
The kicker is that Kenny is a devout Muslim.
