Atheists should join Pope in the battle against funeral face

By James Kirk Wall, Saturday at 10:07 pm

On December 22nd Pope Francis boldly addressed a disease that’s been plaguing mankind for thousands of years. Funeral face. For the Pope this was mentioned as one of 15 illnesses afflicting high ranking members of the church.

So what is funeral face? Symptoms include gruff and grim expression, the need to be serious at all times and the stiff, hard and arrogant treatment of those deemed inferior. The disease is fed by fear and insecurity.
Treatment – A happy heart that radiates with joy and infects other people. A spirit of joy, humor and modesty.

This illness certainly isn’t secluded to top members of the Catholic hierarchy. We’ve all been affected by funeral face at one time or another. It’s a dark cloud that makes things miserable. It could be a teacher, coworker, boss, sibling or parent. People who suck the joy out of everything. And perhaps we ourselves have been carriers of the affliction far too often.

Atheists often feel angry and isolated as we’re the rational minority stuck in an insane asylum. Frustration occurs when we clearly demonstrate to people the logical fallacies and moral flaws of their beliefs, but they refuse to listen. But sometimes it’s best to take a step back and take the world as it is, not how we want it to be. We all carry the burden of worries, but we mustn’t carry them all of the time. This is the one life we have, what good is it wasting the days away completely engulfed in troubled thoughts?

I detest sermons and the rector goes for 20 minutes. I have told her to be merciful but i think she enjoys hearing the sound of her voice.

I good sermon should last no longer than 10 minutes.

got called to do our daily mass with no notice when the scheduled priest forgot about it and left the campus. For the sermon he said, "When I was in major seminary, they told us that in our sermon we should tell people to pray a lot, go to church a lot, and give a lot of money. Amen."

superior you are.

I'll spend some time laughing today and it will be at your mistaken beliefs about yourself which are based solely on your faith.

6. So glad the Pope decided to join Atheists on this issue

Atheists have, for years, been telling them stuffy religious types they are too serious, the video attached to the OP is, after all, a group of atheists telling the religious to lighten up and enjoy life, because that's all there is.

While the pope's admonitions were directed toward religious leaders, the admonitions of the author could be applied to many, and he specifically applies them to fellow atheists.

Hey, I'll try if you will.

9. How does any one point out the logical fallacy and moral flaws of their beliefs?

I can see a lot of moral flaws in organized religion, and I point them out all the time. If people's beliefs were logical they would not be beliefs; but knowledge. If people treat their beliefs as if knowledge, that is hardly logical, but who expects logic from anything as illogical as belief? You may be frustrated because you are trying to do the impossible and the fact that you keep trying may be illogical. Are you ready for the implications of that?

I would measure the prospect of gain against the prospect of success and call fighting with organized religion a complete waste of time. Human nature plays so large a part of it all that it will never be over come, but must die of neglect, yours, and theirs.

being in her presence I've likened to being in death. There is no joy, no fun, no empathy. Just a scowl and the pervasive scent of three packs of smoked cigarettes a day.
