Supreme Court rules against gov't in Catholic college contraception case

http://news.yahoo.com/supreme-court-rules-against-govt-catholic-college-contraception-192246159.html

The United States Supreme Court on Monday overturned a court judgment in favor of the Obama administration which barred a Catholic university from refusing to pay for contraception for employees on religious grounds.

Monday's ruling overturned a judgment against the University of Notre Dame, a prominent Catholic college, which had also refused to fund contraception, a mandatory provision under President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul.

...

Monday's ruling reflected the position of the Supreme Court last year, when the nine justices, five of whom are conservative, ruled that freedom of religion ought to apply to businesses as well as individuals, meaning an employer should not be compelled to pay for contraception if it violated his or her religious beliefes.

"This is a major blow to the federal government's contraception mandate. For the past year, the Notre Dame decision has been the centerpiece of the government's effort to force religious ministries to violate their beliefs or pay fines to the IRS," said Mark Rienzi, senior counsel of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which filed an amicus brief in the case.

to all these employees of these "religious" anti-contraception employers. Difficult, I know, but that is the only way around it. Maybe on the Federal or State Exchanges for the ACA?

Send your children to legitimate colleges. Remember that Dame and Hobby Lobby provided contraception before the mandate.
Both institutions can drop dead.

for the said coverage, they REFUSE TO LET PEOPLE OPT OUT so they can buy coverage that DOES cover it, outside the institution.

That's fucking vile.

They refused to sign EBSA Form 700—Certification, until the 11th hour, now they want to void that and PREVENT Meritain and AETNA from paying for contraceptives out of their own pockets, directly to the customer without cost to Notre Dame (though reimbursed by the government).

It's not that Notre Dame doesn't want to pay for it on pain of their conscience. They want to prevent people from using it AT ALL, regardless of who pays for it.

Tyrants. Assholes. Vicious, mendacious morons.

Because the Catholic Church and its teachings don't affect anyone but Catholics! And because women can just "go to any drugstore and buy some rubbers." I know these things because a very progressive and tolerant DUer has said so.

divorced from employers entirely.

If we can't have some type of medicare-for-all/medicaid system like Canada, at the very least, let everyone, not just those whose employers don't offer insurance, to be able to pick exchange plans, qualify for subsidies according to current standards, and pick plans they like or fit their needs.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with religion or religious privilege, at least according to the Canon of Approved Thoughts here.
