INDIANAPOLIS The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has sent a letter to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence threatening to cancel its 2017 convention in Indianapolis if he signs controversial legislation that could allow business owners to refuse services to same-sex couples.
"Our perspective is that hate and bigotry wrapped in religious freedom is still hate and bigotry," Todd Adams, the associate general minister and vice president of the Indianapolis-based denomination, told The Indianapolis Star.
Adams said the Disciples of Christ would instead seek a host city that is "hospitable and welcome to all of our attendees."
Pence plans to sign the "religious freedom" legislation, which could protect business owners who don't want to provide services for same-sex couples, in a private ceremony Thursday, spokeswoman Kara Brooks said.

(146,218 posts)Indianapolis is a popular convention location in the midwest and they count on it.
I also hope that merchants will organize to put up signs that say something like "We don't discriminate" and those that lack those signs will become obvious.
I hope this completely blows up in their faces.

(146,218 posts)This is going to turn out to have been a very bad idea.
You know what I'd like to see? A blizzard of press releases from churches and other religious groups from all over the country, stating exactly where they stand in regards to this kind of legislation.

I know it's not the norm, but they are out there and they need all the support we can give them.

Which of course, suggesting one do so, scratch that... suggesting one might even suggest it to the believers outside their group, has caused you to attack me the past.

(33,982 posts)That's the 'looks like' to me. Because this is a tiny percentage, and the major religious players are actually lining of for the photo op with the governor that signed this vile, bigoted law into force.
The catholic representation at the signing just HAPPENED to be of the same order as the wonderpope. Just a coincidence. I'm sure the pope himself disapproves. Or something.
