Actor Patrick Stewart has taken the side of the Christian bakers in Northern Ireland in what some have dubbed the gay cake debate, supporting the right of the bakery to refuse to make a cake with a marriage equality message.
Ashers Bakery, which operates a chain throughout the British province, last month lost a court battle over the order to create a cake with images of Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street and the words, support gay marriage.
The McArthur family, which owns the chain, were found guilty of discrimination and fined the equivalent of $763. "This is direct discriminaton," wrote Judge Isobel Brownlie in her ruling, "for which there is no justification."
The McArthurs say they will appeal.

(33,615 posts)I see his point. That it was the actually language, but what if they objected to the language because it was just two names with the same gender? Were their other political themes that they did that they objected to, but draw the line at this (I guess that would apply more to a printer than a baker)
There is probably something about usual and customary that comes into play.

(43,049 posts)At some point there is speech that you can object to without penalty.
Where is that point?

(33,615 posts)As I said, I see his point, but I am not saying I agree.

(48,181 posts)The cake message was not offensive or inappropriate.
If they were willing to bake the cake without the writing, I don't see the issue. This is a frivolous lawsuit, just people trying to push the envelope.
the UK has different laws than the US on free speech.

(116 posts)You wouldn't be able to get a "Support ISIS" cake over there. People have gone to jail for less.
Business owners need to be able to use their own discretion without fearing prosecution for discrimination.
The exception involves threatening, abusive, insulting words or behavior that has the intent to cause harassment harm, distress or cause a breach of peace. This exception is nice on its face and it certainly can prevent hate speech but I've always felt (as much as I hate this saying) its a slippery slope.

(33,615 posts)"Yes on Gay Marriage". Not that it was just for a wedding with names on it.
I can't say I agree,but I see his distinction.

(17,505 posts)Depending on whose names were on the cake... wouldn't that also say "Yes on Gay Marriage"...if it was a same sex couple?
So why not just say it "out loud" too?
edhopper
(33,615 posts)is a political statement.
Deciding that some names can be written on a cake and others not is discriminating.

(5,169 posts)Did the people buying the cake have permission to use Bert and Ernie on a commercial product?
I am seriously doubting Patrick Stewart is a RW homophobe.

(48,181 posts)And nobody has claimed that Stewart is a rw homophobe.
So good for you, two, two strawman arguments in one post!
