NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The president of the nation's largest Protestant denomination is exhorting members to stand united against same-sex marriage and vows that he will never officiate at a same-sex union.
Pastor Ronnie Floyd was speaking to delegates at the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio. But he says his message is also for the U.S. Supreme Court which is expected to rule soon on whether same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry and for all of America.
Floyd says God defined marriage in the Bible as a lifetime commitment between one man and one woman. Floyd said some churches "may be bowing down to the deception of the inclusiveness of same-sex marriage," but he vowed that Southern Baptists "will not bow down."

While almost all of DU would roundly condemn this idiot as an odious bigot, not all of us who post here share that opinion.

(48,181 posts)I'll bet real money (up to $1.00 even!) that within 10 years they will be marrying the gays and pretending that they were always for same sex marriage. At the moment they are still deluding themselves that it is 1999 and there is a political advantage to homophobia.

(13,029 posts)that they're not bigots, though. Because sincerely held religious beliefs excuse bigotry, as everyone knows.

(13,029 posts)you'd know it's been done. Many, many times. What's your point?
And of course, the people who have been so accused do the same thing you're accusing me of, but you and your high horse have been strangely absent. So you'll understand if I don't take you too seriously here.

(16,916 posts)and I'm 100% unsurprised at your inability to cash it.

(13,029 posts)As you claimed. That's YOUR check..you wrote it..now cash it...or go away.

(16,916 posts)"Some posters here would loudly affirm that they're not bigots..."
Who are not bigots?
"Some posters here..." thats who.

(13,029 posts)The "they" refers to the Southern Baptists of the OP, and particularly the speaker. Nice try, though.
So did you come in here just to fling false accusations, or did you actually have a worthwhile purpose? In either case, you're free to apologize, though I'm hoping and expecting that you'll double down on your accusation instead. Oh, please.

(16,916 posts)You're the one that wrote the ass backwards sentence with a broken pronoun reference.
You caused the misunderstanding...just you.

(48,181 posts)you have descended to a grammar attack.
And here is an example of a frequent poster in this forum giving homophobic bigots a pass "because god"
No, of course not. Close minded, yes. A bigot? No. You would have to expand on what you mean by "adamantly". Marriage is a social convention, which means different things to different people. In itself, it is not a subject of bigotry.

(16,916 posts)And were called out for it, would you whine that you meant '"Osama is a terrorist " and accuse people or spelling attacks?
That would be pretty pathetic.
The poster should take some personal responsibility, admit he created the confusion, and fix the post.
At least you brought back a specific, on point example of the bigotry the poster observed., which was all I ever asked for..

(13,029 posts)Especially since your knee-jerk response was a false and ugly accusation, based on assuming the worst, rather than a request for clarification. My meaning seems to have been perfectly clear to those with reading comprehension, but please, continue with your accusations if it makes you feel righteous.

(7,886 posts)but please do your research before you accuse others of being cowards. Said members have been called out repeatedly, at least one is even on vacation, but callouts like you are asking for tend to get alerted on.

(16,916 posts)the poster wrote a crap post, practically begging to be misunderstood. I don't care about grammar till the lack of grammar causes communication issues, as has happened here.
So send an alert on me. Please.
Warren Stupidity
(48,181 posts)Why would anyone here do that?

(13,029 posts)But there are no communication issues..only understanding issues. And they're your issues, not mine.

Can't even be consistent with their bullshit bigoted hyperbole.

(106,886 posts)This too, in a large part, will pass. That much is clear, imo. Though bigotry will surely continue to exist, blindly violent and deadly at times, the tide for equality has turned.
Who was that English king that demanded the tide to turn? Didn't go so well for him, regardless of crown, title or wealth.

(3,622 posts)to marry a same sex couple now or in the future. Sad that he thinks he needs to hide his bigotry behind his religion but that does not seem to be that uncommon.
