Finding your place: atheism

By Ariela Martin | September 10, 2015, 5:54 PM

Last year, three atheists and agnostics took over took over an empty table at the Activities Fair, which yearly takes place on College Walk. During the few hours they stood outside, over 200 people expressed interest and put down names and emails.

Now, they hold official club rights on campus. Known as the Columbia Atheist and Agnostic Students Society (ASSS), you can find those same three guys—now the founders of the club—holding weekly discussions and lectures on Wednesdays.

This post is part of a series that will explore the different religious communities on campus. If you are part of a religious group that would like to be featured, email ariela.martin@columbiaspectator.com. And here’s a full list of student groups on campus.

Why join a community for atheists and agnostics?

“They don’t feel the need to join a group like this,” said Ben Makansi, CC ’16, one of the three founders. “Even if they don’t believe in a God, they don’t identify as being atheists.”

They are smart as the word "atheist" is the "Rosebud" of the believing zealot. Yeah.
