http://www.scpr.org/news/2016/04/27/60056/ca-medical-association-seeks-to-join-aclu-s-tubal/The Medical Association says it's illegal for Dignity Health's hospital administrators to intervene in the decision to tie a woman's tubes after a C-section.
"It's the physician, with his or her patient, who should make that decision," says Dr. Ruth Haskins, the Medical Association's president-elect. "It should not be administrators, who are laypeople, making medical decisions that have such a consequence."

The suit stems from a case at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, one of Dignity Health's 29 hospitals across the state. Mercy Medical says its refusal to perform the procedure was based on the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, written by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Directives - followed by all of California's 35 Catholic hospitals - prohibit birth control, abortion and, in most cases, sterilization.

(49,533 posts)Unfortunately many individuals view it as a good thing that a church is taking over a hospital, assuming that the church won't care about profit, and will care about people. But there is this very dark, very anti-woman side of things that we should not accept.

(2,262 posts)When an abortion was necessary to save the life of the woman, more than one Bishop at first refused.
In some cases, bishops refused even when the Catholic hospital was the only one available in this emergency.
Don't like this? Too bad; go ahead and die, one Bishop said.
Your tax dollars at work. Most Catholic hospitals get at least indirect government support.
