A LARGELY Muslim province in China has demanded strict adherence to the governments ban on religion in schools after a video of a kindergarterner reciting Quranic verses was circulated online.
The provincial government in the northwestern province of Gansu emphasized the communist governments official atheistic rules, which strictly forbid religion in public schools at all levels.
Gansus government said the rules were put in place to protect the children of China.
The video features an unidentified girl wearing a black hijab on her head, inside a classroom with other students donning hijabs and skullcaps.

(4,246 posts)I'm not familiar with Chinese policy towards religion outside keeping religion out of schools.
Interesting topic.

(82,333 posts)Either way, I don't think it's analagous to U.S. schools and the First Amendment.
"The only institutions excepted from the ban are schools founded by religious organisations, and certain colleges and research institutes responsible for religious education and the study of the subject."
So, the ban was in a public school.

Third question: if it is a religious school, regardless of the funding, should the government bar reciting the Quran?
The answers are clear to me in the U.S., but it's not clear to me in China.

Exemptions are made for private religious institutions.
Not clear?
